What is the “Adopt a Shark” program?

The Saving Our Sharks Foundation’s “Adopt a Shark” program offers a meaningful and educational way to contribute to marine conservation in the Mexican Caribbean. Through various levels, participants known as Shark Heroes, not only support shark research and protection but also receive exclusive benefits that directly connect them with these majestic predators.

Who can adopt?

This program allows individuals, families, schools, and businesses to symbolically adopt a shark, thus funding essential research and conservation projects carried out by Saving Our Sharks. Adoptions help strengthen the foundation’s research capacity, which uses satellite tagging techniques to understand the lifestyles and movements of sharks throughout the Caribbean region and beyond. They also support environmental education projects with the community and government.

Adoption Levels and Benefits

Saving Our Sharks offers several adoption levels, each with specific benefits:

• Shark Supporter ($5 USD/month): Monthly contribution that includes a color digital photo of a tagged shark, a personalized adoption certificate, and a social media badge.
• Shark Friend ($25 USD): A one-time contribution that provides a personalized adoption certificate, a digital photo of the adopted shark, inclusion of the name on the Adoption Wall, and a 10% discount code on foundation merchandise.
• Shark Guardian ($75 USD): Includes all the above benefits, plus access to online shark tracking and a 15% discount code on merchandise.
• Shark Protector ($150 USD): In addition to the above benefits, this level includes an adoption kit with a Shark Hero cap and T-shirt from the foundation.
• Shark Explorer ($2,500 USD): Allows you to symbolically adopt and name a real shark, ideal for businesses, families, or groups. Includes GPS shark tracking and all the above benefits. It also includes awareness-raising artwork for the adopter group. (saveoursharksfoundation.org)

Contributions Impact

The results of contributions through the various channels offered by Saving our Sharks can be seen in its most successful project: the Iniciativa Tiburón Isla Mujeres, which has successfully halted shark fishing for years by encouraging shark fishermen to transition to sustainable activities, saving thousands of sharks, and promoting ecotourism and research as a sustainable alternative for local communities.
