July 14, International Shark Awareness Day, represents a key moment to recognize the ecological value of these species. Inspired by this celebration, throughout the month of July, Mexico commemorates National Shark Month, an initiative led by SEMA Quintana Roo (Secretariat of Environment), SOMEPEC (Mexican Society of Cartilaginous Fish), and the Saving Our Sarks Foundation. This 31-day celebration brings together institutions, authorities, civil society organizations, specialists, communities, and ocean advocates to recognize the importance of one of the planet’s most fascinating and essential animals: sharks.

A Movement Growing Across Mexico

What began as a collaborative effort to strengthen marine education and conservation in Quintana Roo continues to grow into a national movement. In 2026, this initiative reaches a new milestone with an unprecedented program: more than 60 activities across Mexico designed to bring scientific knowledge closer to communities, promote conservation, and create opportunities for people of all ages to participate.

Through conferences, workshops, educational activities, community gatherings, and awareness campaigns, National Shark Month encourages collective action to protect these vital guardians of the ocean.

Why Dedicate a Month to Sharks?

Sharks play a fundamental role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. As key predators, they help regulate food webs and contribute to the balance and resilience of ocean environments. Their presence is an indicator of healthy ecosystems, and their conservation benefits thousands of species, including human communities that depend on the ocean.

However, for decades, sharks have been surrounded by myths and negative perceptions that have fueled fear and misinformation. This has contributed to their overexploitation and the degradation of important marine habitats.

National Shark Month represents an opportunity to change the narrative: from fear to knowledge, and from awareness to action.

Everyone Can Be an Guardian of the Ocean

Shark conservation is a shared responsibility. From learning more about these species, participating in educational activities, supporting conservation initiatives, or promoting responsible practices, every action contributes to building a future where people and marine life can thrive together.

National Shark Month 2026 is an open invitation to all of Mexico to celebrate, learn, and take action for the guardians of the ocean.

Together, we continue transforming lives and saving sharks.

We invite you to explore the full program and join the more than 60 activities taking place throughout July to unite Mexico in support of shark conservation.
